About How-to Baker

Brian with the family's favorite pet...Chloe!

My name’s Brian, a self-taught baker living in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. My passion for baking can really be attributed to my great grandma Vera. When I was little, I would occasionally get to spend the day at her house; often in the kitchen. The first recipe we made together was a cinnamon roll recipe from the Better Homes & Gardens cookbook. Now that I think about it, this could be why I enjoy cinnamon rolls as much as I do!

Like many people who are fanatical about food, when I am not working or spending time with family and friends it is a safe bet you can find me in the kitchen whisking away on something new. After several years of copying down recipes for family and friends, I decided to go digital and with howtobaker.com. Since starting this site, howtobaker has really become a way for me to store and keep track of favorite baking recipes without having to dig through enormous stacks of cookbooks and recipes.

People often think my baking obsession is borderline certifiable but I love the feeling of taking basic, raw ingredients and transforming them into something extraordinary. I get a thrill out of seeing people’s faces light up when sharing baked treats with family and friends. And I savor every moment when discussing a new recipe or technique with a complete stranger on the street.

What is the goal of howtobaker.com?

Baking need not be complicated or intimidating. With this site, I present many baking successes (with a few failures mixed in) without a lot of added fuss. Within these pages, you won’t find any extra-fancy ingredients such as pure Madagascar vanilla (though, there is something to be said about pure vanilla extract). What you will find are quality descriptions and step-by-step pictures to help guide your baking journey.

So, now that you’ve gotten to know me a little more…why not have a cupcake?
